Getting to the Altar
The Foundation Series

Foundation First

Foundation

A relationship with Christ is the bedrock of a strong, lasting marriage. A Christ-centered relationship is not something we add later — it is what everything else must be built upon. When Christ is at the center, the relationship is daily intertwined with the Author and Finisher of marriage itself.

“For other foundation can no man lay than that is laid, which is Jesus Christ.” — 1 Corinthians 3:11
Communication

Through an intimate walk with God, we learn how to communicate with truth and humility. We begin to understand who we are, where our wounds are, and how to heal. We learn forgiveness — not as a concept, but as a lifestyle. We also learn what true love is and what it is not, and that discernment is essential for a marriage that will endure.

“Therefore whosoever heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them, I will liken him unto a wise man, which built his house upon a rock.” — Matthew 7:24
Healing

Before two lives are joined, God works on each heart individually. Emotional healing, identity, and spiritual maturity must be established before covenant, not discovered after the vows are exchanged. Marriage has a way of revealing what we avoided addressing in private.

“Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life.” — Proverbs 4:23
“He healeth the broken in heart, and bindeth up their wounds.” — Psalm 147:3

A solid biblical foundation is not optional. It is essential for healing, clarity, and the ability to love well. Without it, relationships are built on emotion, desire, or timing — all of which shift. With it, love is rooted in truth, wisdom, and obedience.

“Except the Lord build the house, they labour in vain that build it.” — Psalm 127:1
This is why Getting to the Altar begins with foundation first — because covenant requires preparation, not assumption.
